It’s unfortunate that the topic of Mental Health can be taboo amongst certain communities – a conversation that does not come without its stigmas.
What’s clear, however, is that mental health education in the Muslim community is seriously lacking, and therefore, many are suffering in silence and remain confused about their thoughts, feelings and emotions, and may in turn feel as though they are bad Muslims, or perhaps Allah (swt) does not love them enough.
Misinformation, cultural misguidance and a lack of understanding of the Quran and Sunnah’s approach to Mental Health can often lead to this dangerous assumption that being sad or depressed must mean there’s also a lack of faith.
What many fail to realise is that Mental Health is a theme within the Quran itself, and the Seerah of the Prophet (pbuh). If only we realised that in these stories, Allah (swt) is showing us that it’s okay to express emotions, to struggle, and to feel lost sometimes.
In order to combat the stigmas and provide our communities with practical solutions however, we must increase in our efforts to educate one another based on sound Islamic, scientific and psychological sources.
For this reason, we have released a series of in-depth podcast episodes on the theme of Mental Health.
These are free to listen to on our podcast show – click on the links below to listen.
A well-balanced, eye-opening introduction to Mental Health in light of both Islamic and scientific teachings accompanied by some shocking facts and statistics.
In this episode we break the misconception that being sad, depressed or anxious somehow relates to a lack of faith. Raw, meaningful, and filled with hope.
This time we’re diving deep into a highly relatable topic of OCD, and discussing how this condition can truly destroy an individual, with ways on how to overcome this.
Deep diving into one of the segments from their Trauma series on Yaqeen Institute, sisters Sara and Najwa discuss how hopelessness, negative thoughts of one’s self and even past traumatic experiences can affect our relationship with Allah (swt).
